WordPress was created to give people what they want. Essentially, this means that the site was built to give people a place to publish their blogs that is professional, well kept and well built. Officially, WordPress was launched in 2003, which gave access to the blog publishing platform to the public. Publishing a blog is when it is put on the internet for people to find and read. A blog is a place for people to interact with one another.

Two people, Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little created WordPress and are responsible for its launch. Before WordPress was launched, giving people a place to publish their blogs using free WP themes, a blog publishing platform called cafelog or b2 was created. This site was created by Michel Valdrighi, who now contributes his work and knowledge to the official WordPress site.

Since 2003, WordPress has won two different awards. The first called the Packt Open Source CMS Award was given to WordPress in 2007. The Second, called the best Open Source CMS Award was won in 2009.
